General Regulations

1.  Academic Dress

 (i) Academic Dress
Academic dress shall be defined in three ways as follows:

(a) Academic undress: a black gown.
(b) Academic dress:
Undergraduate Licentiates and First Degrees
Licentiates (Undergraduate Diplomas, Certificates and Foundation Degree): black Bachelor's gown with appropriate hood where specified in (ii(a)) below or for the Licentiate in Dental Surgery* gown as specified in (iii) below;
Bachelors: black Bachelor's gown with appropriate hood; Masters: black Bachelor's gown with appropriate hood;

Postgraduate, Research and Higher Doctorates
Licentiates (Postgraduate Diplomas and Certificates): black Master's gown with appropriate hood;
Integrated Masters and Bachelors: black Master's gown with appropriate Master's hood;
Masters: black Master's gown with appropriate hood;
Doctors: black Master's gown with appropriate Doctor's hood;
Integrated Doctors and Masters: black Master's gown with appropriate Doctor's hood.

(c) Full academic dress:
Undergraduate Licentiates and First Degrees #
Licentiates (Undergraduate Diplomas, Certificates and Foundation Degree): black Bachelor's gown with appropriate hood where specified in (ii(a)) below and cap or for the Licentiate in Dental Surgery* gown as specified in (iii) below and cap;
Bachelors: black Bachelor's gown with appropriate hood and cap;
Masters: black Bachelor's gown with appropriate hood and cap.

Postgraduate, Research and Higher Doctorates
Licentiates (Postgraduate Diplomas and Certificates): black Master's gown with appropriate hood and cap;
Integrated Masters and Bachelors: black Master's gown with appropriate Master's hood and cap
Masters: black Master's gown with appropriate hood and cap;
Doctors: appropriate Doctor's gown, hood and cap;
Integrated Doctors and Masters: appropriate Doctor's gown, hood and cap.

 (ii) Hoods
All hoods shall be of simple shape (without cape) and a turned black cuff on the cowel portion, except for Masters of Philosophy and Doctors which are of the full shape, and all hoods shall be lined. The colours of scarves and hoods appropriate to licentiates and to graduates of the University shall be as follows:

(a) Licentiates $:
Advanced Diploma: maroon lined with middle green with a one-inch band of light green laid in the centre of the cuff;
Certificate of Higher Education: maroon lined with light green;
Diploma in Higher Education: maroon lined with middle green;
Foundation Degree: maroon lined with middle green with a one-inch band of dark green laid in the centre of the cuff;
Graduate Diploma or Graduate Certificate or Professional Graduate Certificate: maroon lined with dark green;
Graduate Certificate: see Graduate Diploma
Postgraduate Certificate: maroon lined with light green with a one-inch band of white silk laid in the centre of the cuff;
Postgraduate Diploma: maroon lined with middle green with a one-inch band of white silk laid in the centre of the cuff;
Professional Graduate Certificate: see Graduate Diploma.

(b) Graduates:
Bachelor of Arts: dark green lined with dark green;
Bachelor of Arts (Collegiate)*: dark green with a one-inch band of mid-green laid in the centre of the cuff;
Bachelor of Broadcasting*: light green with a one-inch band of middle green laid in the centre of the cuff;
Bachelor of Commerce*: light green lined with dark green;
Bachelor of Dental Surgery: dark green lined with middle green;
Bachelor of Design: middle green lined with light green;
Bachelor of Divinity*: dark green with white lining and band and with one inch of scarlet laid in the centre of the cuff;
Bachelor of Education*: dark green with a one-inch band of light green laid in the centre of the cuff;
Bachelor of Engineering: middle green lined with dark green;
Bachelor of Health Science: middle green lined with middle green with a one-inch band of light green laid in the centre of the cuff;
Bachelor of Laws: light green lined with light green;
Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelors of Surgery: dark green lined with light green;
Bachelor of Music: dark green lined with dark green with a one inch band of white watered silk laid in the centre of the cuff;
Bachelor of Performing Arts*: light green edged with a one-inch band of dark green laid in the centre of the cuff;
Bachelor of Science: middle green lined with middle green;
Bachelor of Science (Collegiate)*: middle green lined with middle green with a one-inch band of dark green laid in the centre of the cuff;
Master of Engineering or the Master of Engineering and Bachelor of Engineering or the Master of Engineering and Bachelor of Science: middle green lined with dark green with a one-inch band of middle green laid in the centre of the cuff;
Master of Chemistry, of Geography, of Geophysics, of Mathematics, of Physics, of Natural Sciences, of Environment, of Geosciences, of Design and of Informatics or the Master of Chemistry and Bachelor of Science, Master of Geography and Bachelor of Science, Master of Geophysics and Bachelor of Sciences, Master of Mathematics and Bachelor of Science, Master of Physics and Bachelor of Science, Master of Natural Sciences and Bachelor of Science, Master of Environment and Bachelor of Arts, Master of Environment and Bachelor of Science, Master of Geosciences and Bachelor of Science, Master of Design and Bachelor of Design, Master of Geology and Bachelor of Science, Master of Informatics and Bachelor of Science, Master of Biology and Bachelor of Science, Master of Psychology and Bachelor of Science, Master of Design and Bachelor of Science, Master of Arts and Bachelor or Arts, Master of Science and Bachelor of Science: middle green edged with one-inch band of dark green laid in the centre of the cuff;

Master of Commerce*: light green lined with white with a one-inch band of dark green laid on the white silk;

Master of Dental Surgery: dark green lined with white with a one-inch band of middle green on top edge of the cuff and a middle green neck band;

Master of Philosophy: black stuff or silk lined with middle green and with narrow binding of scarlet to the top edge of the hood
Master of Psychoanalytic Observational Studies or Master of Psychotherapy: dark green lined with light green with a one-inch band of white silk laid in the centre of the cuff;

Professional Doctorates (other than Doctors of Clinical Psychology or of Education); green lined with white with narrow bindings of scarlet on all edges;
Doctor of Clinical Psychology, Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Dental Science: green lined with middle green with narrow bindings of dark green on all edges;
Doctor of Education: green lined with middle green with narrow bindings of white on all edges;
Doctor of Philosophy or Doctor of Philosophy and Master: green lined with middle green with narrow bindings of scarlet on all edges;
Doctor of Philosophy with Master: see Doctor of Philosophy;
Doctor of Dental Science: see Doctor of Clincial Psychology;
Doctor of Divinity: scarlet lined with dark green and with wide white bindings on all edges;
Doctor of Letters: scarlet lined with dark green;
Doctor of Laws: scarlet lined with light green;

Doctor of Music: scarlet lined with dark green and having a one-inch band of white watered silk laid on the green one-inch from top edge;
Doctor of Science: scarlet lined with middle green;
Doctor of Science (Engineering)**: scarlet lined with middle green with with wide bindings of dark green to all edges.

(iii) Gowns
The colours of gowns appropriate to licentiates and to graduates of the University shall be as follows:

Bachelor, and Master and Licentiate in all faculties: black;
Professional Doctorates and Doctors of Clinical Psychology, of Education or of Philosophy: green with sleeve linings of green and facings of green bound with scarlet;
Doctor of Divinity: scarlet with sleeve linings of dark green and facings of white;
Doctor of Letters: scarlet with facings and sleeve linings of dark green;
Doctor of Music: scarlet with sleeve linings and facings of dark green with a one-inch band of white watered silk laid on the green on the outside edge;
Doctor of Philosophy or Professorial Doctorate and Doctor of Clinical Psychology, Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Dental Science, Doctor of Education or Doctor of Philosopy and Master: green with sleeve linings of middle green and facings of middle green trimmed with scarlet;
Doctor of Science: scarlet with facings and sleeve linings of middle green;
Doctor of Science (Engineering) **: scarlet with facings and sleeve linings of middle green with dark green on outside edge;
Licentiates in Dental Surgery*: black with facings and yoke of middle green with sleeves of elbow length bordered with green outside and white inside (no hood is worn);
Undergraduates of the University may wear black gowns.

 (iv) Caps
The caps of Licentiates, Bachelors and Masters [both men and women] shall be of the usual hard square mortarboard pattern. The caps of Doctors shall be of black velvet of the usual Tudor bonnet pattern with a gold cord and gold tassels.

 (v) Robemakers
The robemakers to the University by appointment shall be Messrs Ede and Ravenscroft of 93 and 94 Chancery Lane, London WC2A 1DU. Representatives attend at Congregations of the University in order to robe persons who are to be presented for degrees.

# = Those being awarded diplomas, first degrees and masters degrees at the University's degree ceremonies wear academic dress: they do not, through long established University custom and practice, wear the cap (mortarboard) prescribed as part of full academic dress. Caps are available for photographic purposes from the University Robemakers, who are in attendance at all ceremonies.
$ = The scarves prescribed for licentiates before 2006 may continue to be worn under the provisions of the 2004-05 General Regulations
* = not currently awarded
** = Before 2000 the Doctor of Science (Engineering) [DSc(Eng)} was awarded under the title of Doctor of Engineering [DEng].

2. The arms of the University
The arms of the University shall be ‘Vert an open book proper edged and clasped gold inscribed with the words Et augebitur scientia between in chief three mullets argent and in base a rose of the last seeded proper. The crest shall be on a wreath of the colours a Greek sphinx sejant gules.'

3. Interference with the work of the University
Members of the University who engage in activities that deliberately obstruct any aspect of the work of the University or prevent members or employees from going about their lawful business will thereby tender themselves liable to disciplinary action.

4. Precautions against ionizing radiation and laser radiation
No person shall undertake work in the University with ionizing radiation or with material which produces significant amounts of ionizing radiation or with laser radiation except with the approval of the head of the department concerned; and any person who undertakes such work, or who may, for other reasons, be subject to ionizing radiation or laser radiation in the University, must co-operate and participate in the application of any scheme of monitoring or testing which the Radiation Protection Adviser and Head of the Radiation Protection Service may require, and must attend such course of instruction as the head of department may require.
