Geoffrey Wain

Colleagues will be sorry to learn of the death, on 24 January, of Geoff Wain, former Senior Lecturer in the School of Education.

After a short period as a naval officer, Geoff spent 40 years in education. He was at the University for 24 years in the Centre for Studies in Science and Mathematics Education, as director of teacher training. Geoff served as Dean of the Faculty of Education, being a member of the Senate, and the Board of the Faculty of Education and its Policy Group.  He was also heavily involved with the University’s Military, Air Force and Naval Education Committee for many years due to his interest in the Navy. After retirement from Leeds in 1994, he spent two years as a professor at the new University of Malaysia, Sarawak.

Between 1989 and 1992 he was co-director of the PopMaths Roadshow which was a major interactive exhibition of mathematics which toured 24 cities in the UK and Ireland.  He was Secretary of the Joint Mathematical Council of the UK and Chairman of the Nuffield Foundation Committee on the popularisation of mathematics.

In 2013, Geoff co-founded the MathsWorldUK. Following a long-standing period as Chair, Geoff was made Honorary President of the charity.

The funeral service will be held at 12.30pm on Friday 14 February at St Edmunds Parish Church, Lidgett Park Road, Roundhay, LS8 1JN.  Arrangements have been made to fly the flag on the Parkinson Building at half-mast on the day of the funeral in Geoff’s memory.

The family has requested no flowers, but those wishing to do so can make a donation to MathsWorldUK.
